FIFA Gives Yusuf Maart His Flowers for Superb Goal
Kaizer Chiefs midfielder, Yusuf Maart, is being pegged for the FIFA Puskas Award – and by FIFA themselves!
At the Soweto Derby last Saturday, 29 October, Chiefs triumphed over Orlando Pirates 1-0 when Maart fired a perfect strike from the halfway line at the 74th minute.
FIFA recently acknowledged the 27-year-old’s spectacular shot on their official Twitter account.
“A stunning goal to win the #SowetoDerby,” they tweeted. “This strike from @KaizerChiefs’ Yusuf Maart could be one for the #Puskas list. Who do you think deserves the award for the most spectacular goal of the year? Use #Puskas to share your contenders!”
The Puskas Award – which recognises individuals who scored the best goal in a calendar year – will be given out at the Best FIFA Football Awards, which is expected to take place in January next year.
Should Maart be nominated, he’d be the fifth South African after Katlego Mphela, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Hlompho Kekana and Oscarine Masuluke to receive the nod. Here’s hoping he’ll make the shortlist and bring the award home!
